SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS is the long-overdue encounter be- tween Nikolaj Hess and Carlos Guedes for a musical collaboration. This finally took place in Abu Dhabi, at New York University Abu Dhabi’s Blue Hall between May 14th and 19th, 2018. The premise was to sit down, improvise, and create an album. Legendary Portuguese producer and musician Mário Barreiros was invited to record, mix, and master the moment. During this period, more than 7 hours of material were re- corded of which Shadows and Reflections is the first installment. Exploring the threshold between composition and improvisation, where there were no planned structures or actions, the music unfolds from emptiness, and the way it evolves is decided on the spot. The title Shadows and Reflections reveals the process of interaction between the piano and live electronics utilized in these selections. At times, the live electronics create shadows of the piano sound through its real-time manipulation and transformation; the piano provides reflections of the colors created by the live electronics. Other times, the process is reversed and the piano provides shadows to the textures from the live electronic textures and the live electronics create projections from those shadows. Except “Ground mirror,” all the tracks are presented as originally recorded without any subsequent edits or processing. In “Ground mirror” there is an overlap between two different parts of the recorded moment, where one part provides a sonic complement to the other.
